Nikau Hindin

Nikau Hindin is an aute maker and contemporary Māori artist living between Te Tairāwhiti and Tāmaki Makaurau. Nikau has spent the past decade dedicated to remembering and reinvigorating the practice of aute in Aotearoa.

Working intimately with the aute plant, Hindin aligns her practices with the maramataka, Māori Lunar Calendar. Using earth pigments, Hindin inscribes her aute pieces with design systems that come from the whakapapa of whatu raranga and tukutuku and attempt to articulate a Māori system of time. Nikau has exhibited widely, most recently at the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Biennale of Sydney and at the House of World Cultures in Berlin.
